flier. The remaining candidate, Mike Osgood, declined comment on any "backbiting."

Labeling the postcards "despicable,” a scathing April 18 Dayton Daily News editorial supported Wiseman as "not a one-dimensional radical activist."

The Daily News has endorsed Wiseman along with the three Republican candidates in the primary.

Wiseman called the fliers "a classic case of false stereotypes and gay-baiting."

"I have received many calls from neighborhood people who said they had gotten the card and they were appalled by it," she said. "They thought it was despicable and they were going to continue to support me."

Dayton Mayor Mike Turner's reaction to the anonymous postcards has drawn some criticism.

"Certainly, her sexual orientation is an issue that needs to be addressed to the extent that Mary Wiseman and [Democratic mayoral candidate] Tony Capizzi have issues, legislation or policy changes that they want to make at City Hall that relate to her longstanding gay rights activism," the Daily News quoted Turner, a Republican.

The Daily News called his statements "small and divisive.”

"The mayor had an opportunity to come out and say that the effort to polarize Dayton on the basis of false stereotypes is wrong," Wiseman said. “And instead of using that opportunity to pull the city together, Mayor Turner used it as an opportunity to further divide the city and to try to create a political advantage for himself based on the false stereotype that someone who is gay or lesbian is going to be advocating solely issues relating to the gay and lesbian community."

Refusing to be distracted by the fliers or the mayor's comments, Wiseman is focusing on her message.

and say that I am a candidate for Dayton City Commission who happens to be a lesbian and talk about issues of job creation, improving neighborhoods, and uplifting youth. I hope that we're successful and that we blaze new trails for people to follow."

An environmental attorney, she is determined to clean up the brownfields, areas of abandoned factories contaminated by waste. Using available federal and state funds, Wiseman wants to restore the sites for use by developers.

Wiseman has also proposed recreational activities for youths as an alternative to crime and drugs.

With afternoons of door-to-door canvassing and evenings of political events, Wiseman has embarked on a string of long campaign days. Often leaving home at 7 am and not returning until midnight, she is adamant about thanking her 14-year partner Martha Harrison for help in the race.

"It's wonderful to have that sort of longterm relationship and great family support," expressed Wiseman.

She is also grateful for Dayton's re-. sponse to her candidacy.

"It makes me feel so good about Dayton to know that we have a community that's very moderate, a community that's very supportive, and a community that just doesn't want to put up with hate tactics," Wiseman said. "It really makes you feel good about where you live and the people that you live with."
